Belo Horizonte’s Documentary and Ethnographic Film Festival revolves around the interest in making itself known by documentary production institutions, independent producers, universities, research centers and other film festivals. The festival’s juries combine researchers, producers and film critics, responsible for discussing the submitted documentaries.

forumdoc.bh.2012 REGULATIONS

1. INTRODUCTION

Belo Horizonte’s Documentary and Ethnographic Film Festival, forumdoc.bh, is held annually since 1997, and aims to disseminate and discuss classic and contemporary documentary films. The idea is to form an audience interested in this genre, and to map, inform and encourage recent film production through the Competitive Exhibitions, which are divided into two areas, National and International.

2. OBJECT

2.1 This year’s edition will select works for the National and/or International Competitives.
2.2 Interested applicants, directors or producers, can submit films and videos produced in any format on any subject and length.
2.3 The works should have been finalized in 2011 or 2012.
2.4 If the work is an official international co-production, the applicant should choose in which Competitive the work will compete.
2.5 Each applicant, director or producer can submit up to 2 works.
2.6 For the purposes of festival selection, the applicant declares having the power to subscribe to this notice, being the sole responsible for the regulation of copyright, image rights, industrial property and computer software rights, related to intellectual works of any nature, artistic interpretations, musical performances, as well as images, included or synchronized in the movie (s), exempting the festival / event of any claim in this regard.

3. SUBMISSION

3.1 The deadline for submissions begins on June 10, 2012 and ends on August 19, 2012, including internet submission and shipping.

3.2 The applicant should complete the online submission form, featured on the institution’s website, and send a printed version of the form by express mail, signed, accompanied by a DVD copy of the film to the following address:

If the warning “For Cultural Purposes Only” is not written on the envelope, the film will not be accepted by the festival’s organization due to the shipping taxes involved.
3.3 The date of shipping will be checked by the postmark on the envelope, for the purpose of the requirement listed on paragraph 3.1.
3.4 The DVD should be identified with the title of the movie, length, country of origin, year of production, director(s), and e-mail address.
3.5 The organization shall not be liable for delays or damage during the shipping. It is the responsibility of the applicant to monitor the situation directly with the chosen postal service.
3.6 Each DVD should contain one film only.

4. PROCEDURES AND SELECTION

4.1 All entries will undergo a preliminary selection made by the curators the festival.
4.2 The result will be released until 31 October 2012.
4.3 It will be requested to the selected filmmakers for the Competitive Exhibitions a screening copy of their works, which should be: 35mm, Blu-Ray, Quicktime digital video file .MOV, H.264, with compression values between 20 and 25 Mbits, Audio Dobly AC3. The forumdoc.bh will cover the returning shipping costs of the film’s screening copy.
4.4 The filmmakers may submit any promotional material along with the screening copy, such as posters, postcards, etc.
4.5 The selected films will be screened during the festival’s program.
4.6 The selection DVD copy will integrate the Filmes de Quintal Association’s film archive, and will be available for research purposes only at the Faculty of Philosophy and Human Sciences of UFMG and at the main office of the Filmes de Quintal Association.
4.7 The submission on the Competitive Exhibitions automatically allows the screening of the submitted films at forumdoc.bh.2012 and its extension and roaming activities within the state of Minas Gerais, events that integrate the main festival’s program.
4.8 After the disclosure of the result, proponents of the selected films should submit scanned photographs (15 × 20cm, 300dpi resolution, jpeg file), within 15 days, to the email competitiva@forumdoc.org.br. The festival’s organization should use, if necessary, frames of the films or other available images in the catalog, as well as in other printed and promotional material.
4.9 For films produced in foreign languages we request a narration and/or dialogue transcript, in a digital file, for subtitling of the screening copy.
4.10 There will be no prize in money or property for the selected films.
4.11 When registering for the Competitive Exhibition, the director authorizes the use of a trailer, if available, and a 5 – 10 min. excerpt of the movie, for dissemination within the festival’s website.

5. AWARDS

5.1 The choice of best films will be made during the event by a jury of experts, consisting of researchers, filmmakers and art and film critics.
5.2 The results will be available during the event.
5.3 Honorable mentions will be at the discretion of the jury.

6. FINAL PROVISIONS

6.1 The competition’s jury members are not allowed to participate in the Competitive, including their spouses or cohabiting, descendants and collaterals by blood or marriage, up to the second degree.
6.2 The submission of the work involves full knowledge and acceptance of all terms present in this Notice.
6.3 Cases not contemplated in this Notice shall be resolved by the Jury and Festival’s Organization, which will manifest on the matter.
